Above-ground pools are the most affordable, typically ranging between $3,000 and $10,000, depending on size and materials. While they are easy to install, they have a shorter lifespan and are limited in design and size options. Above-ground pools do not add any significant value to your home and do not have the same visual appeal as in-ground pools.

Vinyl-lined inground pools are a budget-friendly inground option, costing between $25,000 and $50,000. However, vinyl liners need to be replaced every 7–10 years, adding long-term costs. Vinyl-lined pools are also susceptible to damage from sharp objects, staining, and can become slippery if the pool chemistry is not properly maintained. Additionally, vinyl liners are porous, which can lead to increased algae growth and require more chemicals to maintain.

Fiberglass pools range from $30,000 to $60,000. They are durable, require less maintenance, and come pre-molded in set shapes. However, fiberglass is less customizable than gunite pools. Additionally, they can be susceptible to osmotic blistering and may require specialized repairs if the gel coat is damaged.

Concrete (gunite) pools are the most expensive, starting in the $70,000 range and going beyond $100,000 for custom designs. They are highly customizable, last the longest, and bring added value to your home, but are costly investments.

Installing a pool involves more than just the upfront price. Hidden costs like permits, landscaping, safety features, utility upgrades, and ongoing maintenance can quickly add up. Planning for these extras ensures you stay on budget and avoid surprises. Know the full picture before diving into your dream pool project.

1. Excavation & Land Preparation

Cost: $5,000 – $20,000+
If your backyard has rocky soil, slopes, or underground utilities, excavation costs can skyrocket.

Solution:

• Get a utility dig test before installation.
• Get a soil test before installation.
• Choose a pool location with a flat surface and minimal rock, if possible.

2. Permits & Inspections

Cost: $950 – $3,000
Most cities require permits for pool installation, and failure to obtain them can lead to fines and delays.

Solution:

• Check local zoning laws before starting construction.
• Hire an experienced contractor who understands permit requirements.
• If you live in an HOA, know what is permitted. Make sure you work with an experienced pool builder who knows how to work with HOAs.

3. Pool Decking & Surroundings

Cost: $5,000 – $20,000
Decks, patios, and pavers provide a beautiful transition from your home to your pool. These costs vary based on the material:

• Concrete is the most affordable but will crack over time and gets hot during the summer.
• Pavers offer a stylish and durable option that offers a cooler surface than concrete, but are more expensive.
• Concrete overlay provides a cooler surface like pavers but at a lower cost.

   

Solution:

• Plan ahead and include decking in your budget.
• Discuss with your pool builder what pieces may be able to be done in phases.

4. Pool Heating & Energy Costs

Cost: $100 – $500 per month with normal use
In Texas, the swimming season lasts much longer than most parts of the country, but we do have our cooler months. With proper heating, you may be able to extend your pool season to year-round!

• Gas heaters are fast but have high operating costs.  Additionally, heating a larger pool versus a spa requires higher gas costs
• Many pool builders may lower their overall up front costs supplying cheaper equipment that does not meet the capacity for your size of a pool.

   

Solution:

• Consider heating your just your spa versus the pool.  Heating a smaller body of water allows you to lower your overall gas bill.
• When comparing quotes, make sure you don’t gloss over the equipment.  Make sure you understand the capabilities of your equipment and work with a contractor that doesn’t mind answering questions, especially with these details. Insist your equipment size and capacity details are listed on the estimate.  Be sure your pool includes variable speed pumps and LED lights to help save on your electricity.

5. Water & Chemical Costs

Cost: $500 – $1,500 per year
Pools require thousands of gallons of water and chemical balancing. Without properly balancing your chemicals, you risk not only health and safety hazards, but hazards to your finished and equipment, as well.

Solution:

• Consider adding UV, Ozone and a saltwater system to reduce chemical expenses.  Note, these upgrades have some drawback so check with your builder.
• Keep landscaping and trees trimmed to help reduce organic materials from falling into the pool increasing the need for extra chemicals.

6. Pool Safety Features (A Must-Have!)

Cost: $1,000 – $5,000
Many municipalities require safety barriers to prevent accidents, especially for homes with kids.

• Different cities have different requirements for fencing. Some requirements include gates to swing out from the pool area, other requirements may be anti-climbing rails. Your city may also include door alarms to detect the opening of an exterior door.
• Pool alarms detect movement in the water, preventing accidents.

Solution:

• Make sure you leave enough in the budget for modifications to fencing as required by your local permitting office.
• Work with a pool builder who understands your local city ordinances.
• Consider adding pool fencing, especially if you have small children living inside the home.
