Pool skimmer basket filled with colorful fall leaves, highlighting seasonal maintenance.

As the days are starting to get shorter and temperatures cool, pool owners start to see an end to their pool season. While it may seem like the pool takes a backseat during the fall and winter, taking the right steps now can help not only protect your investment but also ensure your pool is ready to go when warmer weather returns. Here’s a guide of what needs to be done with your pool during Fall in North Texas.

Debris Removal

As leaves begin to fall, it’s essential to regularly remove debris from your pool. Leaves, twigs, and other organic materials can accumulate quickly and lead to algae growth if not addressed. If your pool is equipped with an automatic pool cleaner/pool sweep (which all of our Dallas Cool Pools pools are!) make sure to run it a bit longer as leaves are falling. Also, do not forget to clean out the skimmer baskets and pool sweep catch bags.

Water Chemistry Balance

As the temperature decreases, your pool’s water chemistry can shift. Don’t forget to keep your chemicals in balance just because you’re not using your pool every day. Keeping your chemicals properly balanced will prevent corrosion, scale buildup, and algae from blooming.

Equipment Maintenance

Fall is a great time to inspect your pool equipment, including pumps, filters and heaters. Ensure everything is functioning properly before the first freeze. If you notice any issues, it’s best to address them now rather than waiting for the Spring.

Monitor Water Levels

Water levels can fluctuate due to evaporation and rain. Make sure the water level remains consistent, ideally halfway up the waterline tile. In colder months, avoid letting the water level drop too low, as this can lead to equipment damage.

Prepare for Unexpected Weather

North Texas can experience sudden cold snaps. If installed (which are included in each of our Dallas Cool Pools pools) test your Freeze Guard beforehand to ensure it works properly and prevent your pool and equipment from freezing.

Plan Pool Projects Now

You’ve been in your pool all season – and maybe you’ve noticed the plaster could use an upgrade? Or you’re tired of that same, old tile and coping? Or you’re dreaming of adding a tanning ledge? Maybe some underwater seating? Or an entire new look? Now is the time to start those projects! Often, pool owners wait until the spring and at that time, especially for larger projects, it’s too late to be ready for when the heat returns. The early fall is the best time to get a jump on those pool projects, so we can have you ready to swim by Spring!
